About Draken Studio

Draken Studio was founded by a graphic designer based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after more than a decade working primarily in digital and editorial environments, and following the completion of undergraduate studies at the University of Buenos Aires and postgraduate studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig, Germany.

The project emerged from a need to step away from the screen and return to a slower, more tangible practice. What began as an intuitive impulse toward manual work evolved into an ongoing exploration of how a graphic language can exist beyond the digital format.

The process begins with the collection of found images. Books and magazines from a wide range of subjects—especially those featuring unusual patterns—serve as a starting point. Images are abstracted and translated into sketches.

Rather than directly copying references, these images are reduced to sketches that become the foundation of each rug’s visual composition. The final pieces never replicate the sketches exactly. Due to the difference in scale—sketches are typically small compared to the rugs—elements are added, removed, or adjusted during the translation into textile. This transformation is also part of the brand’s identity.

Rather than translating images literally, Draken Studio approaches the rug as a way of thinking about composition, scale, and function. The work moves away from the idea of the rug as a static object and instead positions it as an active surface—something that is walked on, used daily, and transformed over time through wear. The rugs are conceived, above all, as functional objects, while maintaining a strong graphic identity.

The entire process is developed in-house. It begins with long afternoons spent in Buenos Aires’ small wool district in the Palermo neighborhood, selecting materials, speaking with shop owners, and tracing the origin and qualities of each fiber. It continues in the studio, where each piece is created through an iterative process: building, editing, and reconfiguring compositions directly on the loom until the final design emerges. In many cases, the initial sketch serves only as a starting point, with the final form defined during the weaving process.

Production takes place in small series or collections of one to five pieces per design, using Argentine merino wool sourced from Patagonia, sometimes combined with other fibers to balance softness, strength, and durability. Santa Cruz is the country’s main producing province, accounting for nearly 90% of the wool used nationally.

In parallel, Draken Studio develops custom rugs in close dialogue with clients. Each piece is conceived in relation to a specific space and way of living, considering routines and use as fundamental elements of the design.

Draken Studio sits at the intersection of graphic design and material practice, building a body of work that explores how images can become physical, and how objects can carry and transform visual language in everyday life.
